Who would want a lock like this on a closet door? (I added the marks).

My mom taped this lock tightly when we moved to this house in 1970(71?) I always wondered why this kind of lock was on the door. Who was hiding in there? (BTW, my phone had the punctuation "stamps" but no arrow stamp).
